SEO Basics-How It Works

SEO Basics

In order to get traffic on your website, you need to rank. In order to rank, you need traffic on your website. Let’s explore the SEO basics and how it works!

Google will rank websites high that are:

  1. Trusted
  2. Useful
  3. Relevant to the search query

1) Google knows a website is trustworthy if:

  • It has a high Domain Authority (internet points out of 100 that grows with backlinks)
  • It has other websites citing it as a reference in their online content.
  • A good website to give you a backlink would be one that is relevant to yours and has a high domain authority itself.

Backlink building/offsite SEO is one the key elements of SEO basics. It refers to the process of writing content for other people’s websites that links back to your website. It is a bit like PR for SEO.

You want to look for website that:

  • Plenty of people are using.
  • Visitors are visiting several pages per visit.
  • Visitors are staying on-site for at least a couple of minutes.
  • Visitors are returning to.

2) Google knows a website is useful if:

  • It has returning visitors.
  • It has content added regularly.
  • It has content that directly answers questions people might ask about a keyword.

This is why we blog. Blogs are not for converting visitors into enquiries. They are for driving traffic to your website, educating site visitors and proving to Google your site is useful.

Other factors that show a site is helpful to users include:

  • An engaged social media audience.
  • Plenty of people using the website.
  • Visitors are visiting several pages per visit.
  • Visitors are staying on-site for at least a couple of minutes.

3) Google knows a website is relevant to a search query if:

  • You have regular blogs-it means you are more likely to have answers to questions.
  • You are answering questions that people are typing into Search Engines that contain your keywords.
  • Other websites that deal with a similar topic are linking to you.
  • Your site is optimised for those keywords

A Good Digital Marketing Strategy Includes:

1) Blogging regularly helps:

  • Increase organic search engine rankings
  • Increase return visitors
  • Drive people to view more than one page when they get there
  • Increase the likelihood of people linking to you
  • Increase the time spent on site
  • Target different keywords in a rota-you can’t target every keyword all the time. You can target 2 or 3 and have to focus for a few months before moving on to another.

2) Regular web page creation helps:

  • Convert traffic that does come onto the website into enquiries
  • Increase return visitors
  • Drive people to view more than one page when they get there
  • Increase the likelihood of people linking to you
  • Increase the time spent on site

3) Adwords/PPC helps:

  • Drive highly targeted, warmer traffic to the site.

4) Backlink Building helps:

  • Prove relevancy, trustworthiness, and usefulness
  • Drive more traffic to the site from people who are interested in similar topics

5) SEO helps:

  • Tick all Google’s tech boxes
  • Keep on top of those issues that crop up in crawls as more pages get indexed (a problem doesn’t stay fixed forever in SEO as parameters change and Google crawls more and more pages-each image is a page, for example.)

No one can predict how much traffic will result in any activity. It depends on the sector and competitors.

A good package of digital marketing work will look like this:

  • 2 blogs a week
  • 1 web page PCM
  • 2-3 hours AdWords PCM
  • 4 backlinks PCM
  • 1 hour SEO a month
